Warning – Cats and collars
Update: this boy was first sighted with a collar around his arm in April 2018. Caught in December 2018 by which time he had somehow managed to remove the collar. In October 2019 he had his leg removed after extensive surgeries and hospitalization for 3 months to try to heal the injury. He is doing well and is the most beautiful cat. I am posting this to try to warn people of the dangers of collars and, if used, to use them properly – see below.

If you use collars on your cat(s) please click on the link for safe collar usage. Whilst collars can be good identifiers our advice is to get rid of the collar and make sure your cat is microchipped.
Cat collar injuries are more common than you think. TELAF often gets reports of lost cats who have collars and I often wonder how many of them end up dying of septicemia due to this particular injury.
Recently I have spent about $2,000 to try to fix a collar injury on a stray cat. He is still a long way off and since I’ve had him the injury has got worse even though he has had treatment and the collar was removed. The under arm is such a sensitive area and very difficult to heal.
Warning: collars can be great identifiers and you can put bells, tags on them etc but if your cat wears a collar please make sure it has the correct tension – just 2 fingers to fit snugly between the collar and the neck. Too loose and the cat can get the collar caught under his front leg. If the cat can’t get the collar off, then the collar will rub under his armpit eventually into the bone. Infection will set in and the cat will die.
If too tight clearly the cat can choke.
Make sure any collar used on cats has a quick release clip NOT JUST an elasticated section.
The collar needs to be checked monthly for stretch and condition.

Just posting here to reach out to the owner (also posted in Jingili community group) and/or get some guidance.
Hi all, we have had a cat wandering around our house for a year or two, and it wasn’t a problem until recently.
This cat has been attacking our own cats for the past few months now, leaving them scared and not wanting to go out in their own garden/safe space. Just wondering if it is anyone’s? Or maybe if you have any advice on what I could do if I can’t find the owners? It doesn’t have a collar and I can’t approach it without it getting scared. It’s always in a it garden and roof. 18 y/o Charlie hasn’t been seen since Wednesday night. Lives in the Alawa area, very unlike him to leave the property, let alone the balcony (and to not turn up for food).
