Top End Lost and Found

Reuniting lost and found pets with their humans

Does your cat wear a collar?

Collars can be great for ID with cats but some points to consider:

  • ensure it is a proper cat collar with an elastic insert (or completely elastic) and with a safety clip
  • check the elastic still has plenty of spring
  • check you can fit just 2 finger (no more) between neck and collar and keep checking with kittens as they grow larger
  • too tight and the cat will choke
  • too loose and the cat is in danger of getting his/her front leg caught in the collar thus causing extensive injury
  • cut the excessive of the collar off.

I once had to cut the excess bit of an elastic collar off the tongue of a cat where she had groomed herself and got the furry elastic excess caught on her tongue and couldn’t free herself. She ended up getting her tongue pinned down to her chest where the collar was. Fortunately we got her quickly so there was no long term damage, but it would have been extremely painful and stressful if she had been left for any length of time.

There are large numbers of reported incidences where the front leg(s) gets caught under the collar causing the collar to cut under the front armpit into the bone. The cat is usually so stressed that he/she will go into hiding, causing huge stress and grief all round. Without intervention this may cause septicemia and eventually death.

Telaf highly recommends microchips :-)

Forever Homes Needed (Barnaby, Mr Winkle, Earnest, Panda, Tommy and Bug)

Alice – mum – is a result of the owner not desexing the original mother. We ended up needing to rehome 3 mums and 12 kittens. In her turn, and very quickly, Alice popped out her own brood. 1 got a home leaving Mr Winkle and Barnaby. They are beautiful kittens but as we don’t want to keep adding to the increasing population of cats/kittens now all are looking for their own forever homes where they will be desexed, kept safe and loved for the duration of their lives. All kittens are 8/9 weeks old and will be rehomed via the Darwin Rescue Group. Call 8927 4480 for more information or to meet one of these little sweeties or e mail to sideon

Earnest’s mum – Coco -  has found her forever home Now Earnest is looking for his forever home. All of his litter mates have now been adopted so he is feeling very left out. With a face like this how could he be overlooked? (although he is a couple of weeks older now- between 8 – 9 weeks)

Lai Lai – another of the mums has 2 kittens left looking for their forever homes. Tommy and Panda. They are a bit older now than in the pict.

all kittens have been wormed, they are all litter box trained and socialised with humans and Barnaby and Mr Winkle are fine with dogs (their best friend in their last foster home was a large but incredibly gentle male Pit Bull who mothered and spoilt them) Earnest, Panda and Tommy have not been exposed to dogs yet.

In his new foster home Earnest met Bug – yes – yet another result of mums not being desexed – will it ever end? Bug is a happy little kitten full of fun and best friends with Earnest. And – yes – also looking for his own people to whom he can give all the love in the world.

When they are adopted the package is for them to be desexed, vaccinated and microchipped. e mail to sideontelaf@gmail.com for more info. or ring 0408 810140

Sighted – Dogs – Palmerston

There are two dogs roaming around in the bush behind the cheap auto shop, Palmerston (Olive Place) on the stuart Highway. The male looks like it has been on the run for quite some time, and is in poor condition. the female looks like she has recently had a litter of puppies.

Male large dog – golden/tan with white blaze on the front and paws.
The female also medium size, darkish, wearing a collar, sorry I cant be more specific.

The female looked to be in better condition than the male.  The male looked to be quite unapproachable, which is why we didnt try to pick it up – we had our dog in the back of our car at the time of sighting.

I hope that these pets get reunited with their owners.
