Warning – Rural residents
There have been reports of packs of wild dogs? dingos? around the Howard Springs/Humpty Doo area and small dogs going missing. Difficult to know what to do but, to avoid heartache, maybe keep small animals in the house, or otherwise contained, when out (if possible).

Cat owners beware – cat used as crab bait – Palmerston area
Telaf now has it on very good authority that many cats are being stolen from the Palmerston area and used for crab bait. We urge all cat owners out there to please secure your cats so this horrible and cruel practice doesn’t happen to them and to keep your eyes open for any odd looking behaviour towards cats.
For all matters concerning cruelty to animals please contact the Animal Walfare dept

Dogs – DCC Pound
There are loads of lost dogs at the DCC pound when I went up yesterday (next to RSPCA in Berrimah). They seem to be coming in hourly. If you have lost a dog go to their web site (check links) and make a visit, check with RSPCA while there but remember RSPCA opening hrs are from 1pm – 5.30pm week days. Rags is still there, terrified and so looking for her owners. Some beautiful dogs there who have clearly had good homes.
Info – Cat – does your cat pee too frequently?
Does your cat squat to wee a lot and not much comes out? It may be that he/she has a urinary tract infection. If so she/her needs to get to a vet. Left untreated this can cause death as the urine is unable to escape, will build up and affect kidneys – can you imagine not being able to pee despite having an overfull bladder? – very painful
New By Laws for Darwin’s cats and dogs
As many of you will by now know Darwin City Council is introducing new and much stricter By Laws for dogs and cats as of 1/7/08. These can be found on the DCC web site. One of the new restrictions is for all cats to be confined to the owner’s property. As we all know it is just about impossible to keep a cat in ones garden without special cat proof fencing, so here are some web sites to go to for info on keeping your cat in your garden – good luck

Information
This is really disturbing. Telaf isnt normally a vehicle for bringing world animal cruelty issues to members of the public but this was sent recently and we found it so distressing that we felt it important to bring it to the attention of animal lovers to give you the opportunity to sign the petition. Organisations like this need to know what the world thinks of some of their practices.
Please be warned some of the images are extremely distrssing.
ID may save you a lot of money
Please consider getting a tag with phone no on for your dog. Its much easier for somebody to call you up directly if they find your lost dog than have to go through the council. It will also save you the cost of an impounding fee. ie. $6 ~ for tag, $80 ~ for impounding fee.
if your cat wears a collar please also consider same, although there are lot of safety issues with collars on cats.
Storm fear – dogs (and cats)
The wet season has started with a vengeance. Many dogs are terrified of thunder and lightening and will bolt from their gardens to seek some sort of safety. Typically there are many dogs wandering lost and scared at this time of the year. If you see a dog who looks lost on the street please think to pick him up if you are able and either call the council, take him/her home or take to RSPCA or PAWS
If your dog has gone missing due to storm fear please check in the above places and report with telaf.
Cats usually cope better but some cats are equally scared.
Microchipping is an excellent way to be reunited with your animal
