Does your cat wear a collar?

Collars can be great for ID with cats but some points to consider:

  • ensure it is a proper cat collar with an elastic insert (or completely elastic) and with a safety clip
  • check the elastic still has plenty of spring
  • check you can fit just 2 finger (no more) between neck and collar and keep checking with kittens as they grow larger
  • too tight and the cat will choke
  • too loose and the cat is in danger of getting his/her front leg caught in the collar thus causing extensive injury
  • cut the excessive of the collar off.

I once had to cut the excess bit of an elastic collar off the tongue of a cat where she had groomed herself and got the furry elastic bit caught on her tongue and couldn’t free herself. She ended up getting her tongue pinned down to her chest where the collar was. Fortunately we got her soon so there was no long term damage, but it would have been extremely painful and stressful if she had been left for any length of time.

Have also seen and heard of many incidences where the front leg gets caught into the collar causing the collar to cut under the front armpit into the bone. The cat is usually so stressed that he/she will go into hiding, causing huge stress and grief all round. Without intervention this may cause septicemia and eventually death.

Cracker Night - not fun for animals

Cracker night is up and coming. Many animals are very scared of fireworks and this is a time typically when dogs especially run away in fear and many get lost/run over/injured etc.

Just remember although crackers are legally only allowed for a few hours on July 1st, in most suburbs they are let off weeks pre and post July 1st.

Please consider your animal (and other people’s) when letting off crackers and if you know your animal is scared a good way to assist is to contain the animal in a spare room with soothing music, windows shut and curtains drawn. Give your animal (dog or cat) blankets to curl up in and somewhere to hide (under a bed or blanket). Some dogs are so distressed they need some sort of sedative - see your vet

Info - Cat - does your cat pee too frequently?

Does your cat squat to wee a lot and not much comes out? It may be that he/she has a urinary tract infection. If so she/her needs to get to a vet. Left untreated this can cause death as the urine is unable to escape,  will build up and affect kidneys - can you imagine not being able to pee despite having an overfull bladder?  - very painful :-(

Lost - Cat - Black (Anakin)

My jet black cat has been missing from Bremer Street, Ludmilla since 18th May. Is very distressing.  She is 6 years old, desexed.  Unfortunately no collar, or microchip.  She has moved house 3x and usually just does not stray.  We did think she had the microchip as she came from the RSPCA in 2002, however they have since told us they did not do the microchip at that time. Anakin is her name, she is very cute and friendly.  I don’t have a photo – however she looks just just Sideon on the home page of TELAF.

Female desexed cat, 6 years old, sleek and shiny black coat, yellow eyes.  Is missing a toe from her left hind leg. Cute and friendly cat, medium build, long tail often shaped into a ? shape.  Slightly bald patches developing in front of ears on top of her head.  Likes being patted on her head.
